The school is organised into four teams:
Under the Education Act 1989, Part 3, Enrolment and Attendance of Students - children are required to attend school every day.
We request that parents phone the school when a child is going to be absent. Written notification is required if a child will be absent for reasons other than illness. This is important as we like to be aware of the welfare of children coming to school. You can also complete the online Absences Form on our Home page.
For occasional appointments such as the doctor or dentist we appreciate notification through the school office or the classroom teacher.
The "Catherine McLeod Library” is a feature of the school. We have a splendid library run by an enthusiastic staff committee and a Librarian. Junior students are welcome to take one book home at a time in a "library bag”, older students may take two books. Books can be exchanged any day, not just at the class library time. To support the students the library is open at lunchtime.
Homework is given to provide purposeful communication between home and school, to develop good study routines, to develop independence and follow up practice of classroom work.
Individual teachers will set the requirements according to school policy and student needs. Class teachers are willing to discuss this with you. Parent support in ensuring homework is completed is appreciated.
It is part of our school policy to promote healthy eating habits. Please do not send sweets or chocolates to school and water is the recommended drink. Healthy snacks are encouraged.
Lunch options will be listed on the notice page of our website.
Stationery packs containing the items required for the year can be purchased from the school office. Any incidentals can be purchased from the office during the year between 8.00 am and 4.00 pm.
Informative newsletters are issued every Wednesday via email. Hardcopies can be picked up at the office. Please make sure we have your current email address.
Notices for the publication should be sent to the office by noon Tuesday.
Hamilton West is a uniform school and these can be purchased from the office.
Secondhand uniforms are available for purchase at the school office, however this depends on availability.
The school has a number of English Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) students who are well catered for at Hamilton West School. We have an expert ESOL teacher who works hard with the other teachers to meet the needs of these students. On enrolment you will be asked about whether your child may fall into this category.
SUPERVISION OF CHILDREN:
Supervision of the students commences at 8:30 am in the classrooms. Students need to be picked up or have left the grounds by 3:15 pm.
Teachers are on duty at morning interval, lunchtime and at the end of the school day to ensure the safety and well-being of all children.
The road patrol is on duty at Hammond Street and Pembroke Street before and after school.
Each year the Board of Trustees recommends a suitable sum as a voluntary payment.
We appreciate receiving this as it enables us to purchase extra resources to enhance students’ learning. Payment may be in a lump sum or by instalment. Receipts are issued for tax purposes.
Cost: $130 for the first child/$90 per child thereafter.
Children riding bikes to school must wear safety helmets. The Ministry of Transport and our school recommend that children over the age of 9 are responsible enough to be permitted to ride to school.
We have many entrances to our school. The best places for parents to park when transporting children to and from school are the Fow Street, Horne Street, Hammond Street and Pembroke (by the lake) entrances.
As part of an awareness of the harmful effects of the sun, children are to wear school uniform hats and use sunblock from Labour Weekend to Easter.
Parents requesting the school to administer medication to their children are required to complete a consent form at the office. A copy of the school policy will be given on request.
Lost property is available for viewing in the storage cupboard by Room 8. Parents are welcome to collect items at anytime. We strongly recommend that all clothing and footwear be named clearly.
Our magnificent hall is available for hire as a venue for club and social activities.
A large hall area and a smaller conference room with a kitchen attached can be used for evening and weekend activities. For more information, or to book the hall, please phone the school office on Phone: 07 839 4911.
Guitar and Ukulele lessons are available at the school. Please ask on enrolment if you are interested in your child being involved.
The school usually has a number of rock bands which we encourage students to be involved in if they are interested in performance music.
REPORTING TO PARENTS:
Parents / whanau need to be informed about how their child is progressing at school and how they can help their child with their learning. Hamilton West School is committed to informing parents / whanau of their child’s progress at school and this happens in a number of ways both orally and in written forms (twice per year) as outlined below:
Charter Achievement Targets
Achievement Reports to the Board of Trustees
Informal teacher and parent / whanau meetings
Formal parent and teacher / whanau meetings requested by either party
Learning Journeys / ePortfolios – Report and interview
LUCKY BOOK CLUB:
Opportunity to purchase books at reasonable prices is provided by Ashton Scholastics through the school. Several times a year children bring home order forms.
Orders are returned to school with cheques payable to "Scholastics NZ Ltd”. Cash is acceptable with the order. The school library benefits from our involvement with the book club.
School Banking is available through the school, anyone interested can ring the office Ph: 07 839 4911.
